The Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts elect Fr Antonio Fernández Cano, M.SS.CC., as Superior General

In an atmosphere of fraternity and communion, the 19 capitulars of the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (Mallorca) have elected the new General Council of the Congregation.
Gathered at the Shrine of Lluc, Mallorca, since 5 July, they elected Fr. Antonio Fernández Cano, M.SS.CC., as Superior General. Following the Profession of Faith and the Oath of Fidelity, the Assembly completed the composition of the General Council, which will lead the entire Sacred Hearts Family. The new Council is composed as follows:
- Vicar General and General Secretary
Fr. Emilio Velasco Triviño (Spain) - General Treasurer
Fr. Dominique Tuyisenge (Rwanda) - General Councillors
Fr. Anaclet Mbuguje (Rwanda)
Fr. Isaías Mata Castillo (Dominican Republic)
In addition to electing the new leadership, during the first week the capitulars worked together with the lay men and women associated with the Congregation. They are now preparing to enter the final stages of the Chapter, where they will define the guidelines that will shape the Congregation's life and mission over the next six years, with the methodological accompaniment of the Claretian Fr. Antonio Felipe Santillán Franceschi, C.M.F.
The meeting, held under the motto "With the Sacred Hearts, We Walk Together in Mission," will officially conclude on 19 July 2026.
Profile of the Superior General
The re-elected Superior General is 68 years old. He was born on 29 March 1958 in Valencia, Spain. He completed his secondary education in Madrid and Murcia and earned a degree in Law from the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) between 1975 and 1980. Before entering the Congregation, he worked in public administration and in education within the Autonomous Community of Murcia.
He completed his novitiate and philosophy studies at the Faculty of Theology in Barcelona and pursued theological studies at the Faculty of Theology in Buenos Aires. He was ordained a priest in Madrid in 2009. Throughout his ministry, he has served pastorally in the Dominican Republic, Valencia, and at the Shrine of Lluc.
