ASSISI – The General Chapter of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, gathered at the Sacred Convent of St. Francis in Assisi, has re-elected Friar Carlos Alberto Trovarelli as Minister General for a second six-year term. The election took place on Saturday, June 7, 2025, during the first round of voting, confirming the Order's trust in his leadership. Friar Trovarelli, an Argentinian friar, is the 120th successor of St. Francis of Assisi.

The Chapter, taking place from June 1 to 21, includes more than 250 friars from around the world. Its timing near Pentecost is significant, as it highlights the invocation of the Holy Spirit as a guiding light in the Order's fundamental decisions.

In his first remarks after being confirmed, Friar Trovarelli expressed his gratitude and willingness to serve, emphasizing the communal dimension of the role entrusted to him:

"I accept this responsibility in the name of the Lord, out of obedience and love for the fraternity. I invite everyone to pray that we may remain faithful to our evangelical vocation. The Gospel is not a utopia; it is a real, possible, and beautiful way of life, as St. Francis showed us."

The Minister General also emphasized the importance of shared responsibility in the mission, which is open to all those who are inspired by the Franciscan charism:

"We need the closeness and commitment of all who wish to walk with us, as brothers and sisters."

During a celebration in the crypt of the Basilica of St. Francis, Friar Trovarelli delivered a message of peace, drawing on the words of the Saint of Assisi:

"May the Lord give you peace!" – a greeting extended especially to world leaders and all people of goodwill.
"May conflicts cease, may weapons fall silent, may violence subside – in nations and in hearts."

On June 20, the Minister General and the members of the Chapter will be received in audience by Pope Leo XIV, marking a moment of ecclesial communion and the official start of the new mandate.

On Monday, June 9, Friar Igor Salmič, from the Province of St. Joseph in Slovenia, was elected as the new Vicar General. He succeeds Friar Jan Maciejowski, from the Province of St. Maximilian M. Kolbe in Poland (Gdańsk).
