(SIR; 24/11/2021) "USG and UISG synodality is a field that we cannot fail to cultivate in the future, because it would be like going against what the Spirit is saying to the Church and to consecrated life in particular. A field and an experience where we can also be a fruitful witness for the whole people of God".

So said Fr Mauro Giuseppe Lepori, Abbot General of the Cistercian Order and member of the Executive Council of the USG (Union of Superiors General), opening the 96th Assembly of the Union with a report on the theme "For a synodal Church: the contribution of consecrated life".

Presenting an evaluation of the three years of the Executive Council of the USG, which will be renewed tomorrow, Father Lepori reminded that "they have been three years clearly marked, for at least half of the mandate, by the Covid 19 pandemic": "We all know how this universal circumstance has changed our lives. The workings of the Executive have also changed, moving from face-to-face meetings to virtual ones. But if we have missed the pastries we used to get at headquarters, the first obvious benefit for everyone has been that since then we have almost always had full Executive meetings. That hardly used to happen before. And this has not only been an opportunity for better work, dialogue and organisation, but also for the exchange of information, solidarity, and sometimes mutual compassion and consolation for some serious situation that occurred in our Orders.
