New General Council of the Legionaries of Christ

The General Chapter of the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ began with the celebration of the Eucharist in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Philip the Martyr, in Rome, on 20 January. The outgoing Superior General, Fr. Eduardo Robles-Gil, presiding.
The primary task of the General Chapter was to address the multiple cases of sexual abuse by members of the order, and the way in which congregation leadership has dealt with them. This task precluded any other work, which was postponed until later in the chapter, including the election of a new Superior General.
On 6 February, John Connor was elected Superior
General of the Congregation. The following day, Fr. John presided at a celebration
of the Eucharist with the other Chapter Fathers. Thereafter, on 7 and 8
February, Fr. Hernán Jiménez was elected First Councilor and Vicar General, and
Fathers Jesús Villagrasa, Rafael Ducci, Pedro Barrajón, Gerardo Flores, and
Michael Brisson were elected as General Councilors. Father José Cárdenas was
once again elected General Administrator.
