New Superior General of the Missionary Society of the Good News

The Missionary Society of the Good News (Sociedade Missionária da Boa Nova – SMBN) held its 15th General Assembly at the Mission Seminary of Cucujães, Portugal, from 13 to 22 July 2026.
The Assembly brought together delegates from the Society's communities in Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, Brazil and Japan. The gathering marked the beginning of the 2026–2030 term, a period that will accompany the Congregation towards the centenary of its foundation, to be celebrated in 2030.
On 22 July, the Assembly elected Fr Luís Miguel Pereira de Castro as the new Superior General of the Missionary Society of the Good News for the 2026–2030 term. He succeeds Fr Adelino Ascenso, who had led the Congregation since 2014.
The members of the new General Council were also elected:
- 1st General Assistant / Vicar General: Fr Nuno Alexandre Henriques de Lima
- 2nd General Assistant: Fr Albino Manuel Valente dos Anjos
- 3rd General Assistant: Fr Alfredo Tumbo Júnior
- 4th General Assistant: Fr Amaro Joaquim Tavares Ferreira
The Union of Superiors General extends its warmest wishes to Fr Luís Miguel Pereira de Castro for the ministry of leadership entrusted to him, assuring him of its prayerful support. At the same time, it expresses its sincere gratitude to Fr Adelino Ascenso for his generous service in leading the Congregation and wishes him every blessing as he continues his mission.
